Electric cars – and therefore EV Charging points – are already flourishing in homes and streets across the UK, accelerated by an interesting grant scheme. With a high proportion of home PV owners opting for plug-in vehicles, you are probably already receiving requests (and questions) from your customers to install home charging stations. Below is our advice to support you in providing them the best service.

What is the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS)?

The Government is accelerating their efforts to make the UK carbon-neutral by 2050, by bringing forward the ban on petrol and diesel powered vehicles forward to 2030. Part of their many initiatives is the EVHS which provides grants for home charging points installed and has very simple and straight forward eligibility.

Under the scheme customers can get up to £350 (incl VAT)  towards purchase and installation of a charge point. Simply they just need to have an approved plug-in vehicle – including leased or company cars, have off-street dedicated parking and choose to install a pre-approved charge point. The grant is then claimed by you, the Installer after installation is complete.

If your customer lives in Scotland, additional funding may be available from the Scottish Government via the Energy Saving Trust, and if they are in the Republic of Ireland check the details here.

How do I claim the EVHS grant?

Under the EVHS you, the installer, must claim the grant from OZEV after the EV Charger has been installed.  You submit the grant claim to DVLA via the Department for Transport portal.

What’s needed to claim the EVHS grant?

NB: Your customer needs to sign this form so take it with you when you are installing

  • Photographic evidence of charge point installation – clearly showing property, off street parking and installed charge point

  • Copy of DNO notification email (form available here) or monthly spreadsheet (available here) listing installations.

  • Copy of the BS7671 Electrical Installation Certificate.

  • Evidence that customer has a qualifying electric vehicle – must include Vehicle Registration Number (VRN) and DVLA will validate. There are additional requirements if the car is leased or is a company vehicle.
